Program Goals
The purpose of this activity is to educate participants on the HIV genetic diversity that has real implications for both clinical care and diagnostic testing.
Target Audience
Infectious Disease physicians, venerologists, virologists, HIV specialists, clinical laboratory and other healthcare professionals interested in the management of HIV.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be able to:- Describe the genetic diversity that has resulted in HIV since the onset of the epidemic.
- Recognize the origins of HIV genetic diversity.
- Explain the potential clinical impact of diversity on HIV transmission, disease progression and response to treatment.
- Evaluate the ability of different viral load assays to detect diverse subtypes.
- Summarize the principles by which tests can be developed for optimal detection.
