Program Goals
This program is designed to improve clinical awareness of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), the leading inherited cause of infant mortality. Historical and updated findings concerning the syndrome and the causative recessive gene survival of motor neuron (SMN1) will be presented. The potential influence that SMN2 has on the severity of the disease progression will also be discussed. Carrier testing and prenatal diagnosis will be discussed along with considerations for population carrier screening.

Obstetricians/Gynecologists, Ph.D. Clinical Geneticists, M.D. Medical Geneticists, Genetic Counselors, Pediatricians, Nurses, Mental Health Specialists, Laboratory Professionals, and related healthcare professionals interested or involved in the clinical relevance of spinal muscular atrophy.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:- Identify the clinical manifestations associated with SMA, including SMA type I, the most common and severe form of the disease.
- Discuss test methodologies for carrier testing and diagnostic testing, including benefits and limitations of each methodology.
- Specify the inheritance pattern and carrier frequency for SMA.
- Explain the general principles of a woman's risk to her offspring.
