Program Goals

This program is designed to improve clinical awareness of health issues for women who are fragile x premutation carriers. Data will be discussed as they relate to benefits and challenges of population-based fragile X carrier screening.

Target Audience

Genetic Counselors, Obstetricians/Gynecologists, Mental Health Specialists, and those related healthcare professionals interested or involved in the clinical management of fragile X syndrome (FXS).

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be able to:

1. Recognize two key clinical features of fragile X syndrome.
2. Specify the carrier frequency for fragile X syndrome (FXS).
3. Define the general principles of a woman’s risk to her offspring.
4. Identify two potential health concerns in women premutation carriers.
5. Explain three potential benefits of prenatal carrier screening for FXS.
6. Evaluate the major concerns that have been expressed about widespread prenatal screening for FXS.
